Wednesday Success Stories- '' Free Speech Is Not A Priviledge''- DotAfro

The first of its kind in South Africa DotAfro is a home grown social networking site, that exclusively caters for people of colour. The site is the brainchild of Mandisa Khanyile and Tumelo Baloyi, they met each other through social activism. They came to a realisation that social media was not a kind space for blackness. That is how the idea of having a social networking site that is pro-black and a safe space free of any censorship was born.

DotAfro is currently in Beta Test Phase and will be fully launched November 18th 2017.  The platform is being tested on both web and mobile by over 500 dedicated test users with an app soon to be released on  Android and IOS. During this time they decided to open the testing to the public for a few reasons . Namely because they want the  community to take ownership of their user experience. Building  a platform that works for them and customised to suit their needs. With this being said they do run a  risk of  larger social networks who have resources taking over their features, but the people will know that they did it first. Their strength is the added  personal touch, the focus is on the community, social activism and our blackness.

Unique features of DotAfro include:
  • They are genderless- No men, no women just humans
  • Like and Dislike buttons
  • They are the first social network to launch voice notes for status updates and comments
  • Not limited to texts only
  • Algorithms do not decide who gets blocked /suspended from the site, the online DotAfro community does
They have their sights set on the African diaspora, the growth potential for this platform is massive . They strongly believe that this could be the tool that will finally unite Africans around a common agenda.  Their slogan is ' Free speech is not a  Privilege', and we have provided the platform to ensure that it prevails.
